The purpose of a mela—a Sanskrit term meaning "gathering" or "fair"—is to unite communities for commerce, culture, and celebration. Rooted primarily in the Indian subcontinent, these vibrant, temporary markets serve as essential social hubs where people exchange goods, celebrate religious festivals, and experience traditional arts, music, and food
Melas function as a central gathering place to meet friends, celebrate communal identity, and build social cohesion.
Traditionally held at intersections of trade routes, melas allow local artisans, farmers, and merchants to sell their goods, agricultural produce, and handicrafts.
They serve as a platform to pass down heritage—such as folk music, dance, and traditional skills—to younger generations.
Many large-scale melas have spiritual origins, such as the massive Kumbh Mela held at sacred river confluences.
